German painter and draughtsman
Ottmar Elliger, who mainly worked as a history and portrait painter, first studied under his father Ottmar Elliger the Elder (1633-1679) in Berlin.
After his father had died he moved to Amsterdam, where he became a pupil of M. van Musschers (1645-1705). From 1686 he worked together with the French painter G. de Lairesse (1640-1711), who lived and worked in Amsterdam since 1667. They created architectural pictures, wall and ceiling paintings with mythological and historical themes.
In 1716 he became a painter at the court of the elector of Mainz, therefore he came back to Germany. From 1726 he worked as an engraver at the academy of arts in Saint Petersburg.
